THE SIGNIFICANT

Global Warming & Climate Change

The planet’s average surface temperature has risen about 1.62 degrees Fahrenheit (0.9 degrees Celsius) since the late 19th century, a change driven largely by increased carbon dioxide and other human-made emissions into the atmosphere.

Most of the warming occurred in the past 35 years, with the five warmest years on record taking place since 2010.

Not only was 2016 the warmest year on record, but eight of the 12 months that make up the year — from January through September, with the exception of June — were the warmest on record for those respective months – recently 2020 tied this record.

The oceans have absorbed much of this increased heat, with the top 700 meters (about 2,300 feet) of ocean showing warming of more than 0.4 degrees Fahrenheit since 1969

The Greenland and Antarctic ice sheets have decreased in mass.

Data from NASA’s Gravity Recovery and Climate Experiment show Greenland lost an average of 286 billion tonnes of ice per year between 1993 and 2016, while Antarctica lost about 127 billion tonnes of ice per year during the same time period.

The rate of Antarctica ice mass loss has tripled in the last decade

Global sea level rose about 8 inches in the last century.

The rate in the last two decades, however, is nearly double that of the last century and is accelerating slightly every year

Since the beginning of the Industrial Revolution, the acidity of surface ocean waters has increased by about 30 percent.

This increase is the result of humans emitting more carbon dioxide into the atmosphere and hence more being absorbed into the oceans.

The amount of carbon dioxide absorbed by the upper layer of the oceans is increasing by about 2 billion tonnes per year

Loss of forests contributes between 12 percent and 17 percent of annual global greenhouse gas emissions

20% of the world’s oxygen is produced in the Amazon forest

Tropical forests, where deforestation is most prevalent, hold more than 210 gigatonnes of carbon

All above statistics acquired from NASA

Sustainability

Anywhere from 3 trees to an area the size of a football field is cleared per second. Nearly 100,000 acres of forest is cleared per day. About 15,000,000,000 trees are cut down every year

It is estimated that within 100 years there will be no rainforests

20% of the world’s oxygen is produced in the Amazon forest

over 80% of the original forest that covered the Earth 8,000 years ago has been cleared, damaged or altered

Bamboo is the fastest growing plant on the planet

It can grow 3 feet in height in 24 hours under appropriate climate conditions

Unlike other woody plants, bamboo reaches maturity after only 3 to 5 years

Bamboo releases 30% more oxygen into the atmosphere and absorbs more carbon dioxide compared to other plants

Eco-systems, Bio-diversity and Endangered species

Tropical rainforests which cover 6-7% of the Earth’s surface, contain over half of all the plant and animal species in the world

We are responsible for mass extinction

Rainforests only cover around 2 percent the total surface area of the Earth, but really about 50 percent of the plants and animals on the earth live in the rainforest

Since 2000, 6 million hectares of forest have been lost each year

Within four square miles of tropical rainforest, you will find 1500 flowering plant species, 750 types of trees, and many of these plants can be helpful in combating cancer

100,000 marine mammals and turtles and 1 million sea birds are killed by marine plastic pollution annually

Recent studies have revealed marine plastic pollution in 100% of marine turtles, 59% of whales, 36% of seals and 40% of seabird species examined

Over 150 plastic bottles litter each mile of UK beaches

Plastic pollution can now be found on every beach in the world, from busy tourist beaches to uninhabited, tropical islands nowhere is safe

There may now be around 5.25 trillion macro and microplastic pieces floating in the open ocean. Weighing up to 269,000 tonnes

Plastic has even been found in the deepest part of our oceans, the Mariana Trench

Local, National and International Pollution

Air, land, and water pollution caused 9 million premature deaths in 2016, or 16% of all deaths worldwide

About 92% of all pollution-related mortality is seen in low-income and middle-income countries, with the poor, marginalized, and young hardest hit by the health effects of the contamination

More than 80% of sewage in developing countries is discharged untreated, polluting rivers, lakes and coastal areas

In some of the least-developed countries, the figure tops 95 percent

People

As the rainforest disappears, so do many potentially valuable drugs. Currently 25% of Western pharmaceuticals are derived from rainforest materials

About 90% of 1.2 billion people living in poverty worldwide depend on rainforests for their daily needs

Worldwide, 1 in 12 people depend on coral reefs for food, storm protection, jobs, recreation and other income sources

Yet 70% of coral reefs have been destroyed, or at least threatened

In the Caribbean region, coral cover has declined from 50% to 10% in the last thirty years alone

Compassionate Capitalism

Examples BELOW of what we INTEND to avoid

A recent study by MCS found many own-brand wet wipes from 10 leading chains that claimed to be flushable failed standardised tests

Disappointingly, some well known corporate giants still use sweatshops and child labour today

A number of these companies have also successfully suppressed all efforts by their employees to unionise and improve working conditions
